Stone Patios & Walks
Below are examples of both dry laid and concrete Veneered flat stone patios and walks. In the stone walks and decking depicted below, each stone is adhered to previously installed concrete slab. The stones are installed using a thin set concrete mortar mix much like a standard ceramic tile instillation. Stones are not usually uniform in thickness so the installer will need to add more or less thin set concrete. This insures a flat even surface. The stones often need to be cut with diamond blades or shaped by hand to create more uniform pattern. This creates evenly spaced joints to enhance the appearance on the finished product. When adhering stones to a slab the joints are always pointed with a non water permeable concrete mix. This insures that the joints are water resistant insuring longevity. Below in the photo and located along the top of the two stands are sample boards with some of the stones available here in Costa Rica. These stones can be used for a patio or walk and for wall veneers.
With any type of stone decking or walk installation, the pitch needs to be no less than one inch in ten feet. This calculated slope is the industry standard. This pitch is more than adequate to insure the proper water drainage to a designated location. This phase of the project is very important prior to installing the stone on a concrete or dry laid base.
The objective is to insure that the water will drain properly from the surface to a pre designated location. With this pitch the area maintains the appearance of being level. On large surface areas, a drain pipe and box may need to be installed in the concrete slab at the time of construction. to direct the water to an appropriate exit point. Laying the stones even and on the appropriate slope is crucial as to avoid small depressions of standing water.

These stones can be used for a patio or walk and for wall veneers. With these stone samples a stone coping can be purchased for use on the pool side edge or for the construction of steps. When we install these stones, each stone is cut and shaped to have evenly spaced joints offering a more uniform appearance and a pleasing view.
Dry Laid Stone Decking:
When laying stones on sand or a crushed stone base, the application is similar to using concrete. When installing stones without concrete the stones should be set on a compacted, thick base of sand or crushed stone no less than six inches in depth.
As with a concrete veneered instillation, the stones are cut and chipped to maintain that the joints are uniform in size and appearance prior to the placement of each stone. When laying the stones base material is added or removed to insure that the stones are set correctly while maintaining the correct pitch for drainage. In conforming to each stones unique shape and thickness, this process provides a firm base for the stone. Additionally, this lessons the possibility of future settling and an unstable walking surface area.
